Friedrich Hofmeister
Friedrich Hofmeister

The Hofmeister Monatsberichte take their name from Friedrich Hofmeister (1782 -1864), who established them 1829. They were issued by Hofmeister's own publishing house, which he founded in 1807. The business, located in Leipzig, still exists as Friedrich Hofmeister Musikverlag, on whose website a history of the firm may be found; it remains in family ownership. Hofmeister was also active in the establishment and enforcement of copyright for music publications within Germany. This represents one aspect of Hofmeister's programme to set music publishing on a firmer business footing, another aspect of which was the Monatsberichte themselves.

The November 1864 issue of the Monatsberichte contained an informative announcement of Hofmeister's death, translated here by Elizabeth Robinson. The standard biographical outline, by Axel Beer, is available on this website in both the German original and an English translation by Elizabeth Robinson.
